At ketambe leuser NP with Let's Birding team and Ansii |
In the heart of Sumatra lies a realm of unparalleled natural beauty and biodiversity - Leuser National Park. For Anssi Kullberg, a seasoned birder from Finlandia with an insatiable passion for avian exploration, this journey to the lush jungles of Indonesia is a dream come true. Joined by his companions from Let's Birding Sumatera, Teddy Wahyudi, and myself, we set out on a six-day expedition filled with excitement, camaraderie, and unforgettable encounters with the feathered denizens of the wild.

Our adventure begins in Nagan Raya, a town surrounded by verdant landscapes and teeming with avian life. From the moment we hit the road, every stop becomes an opportunity to marvel at the wonders of nature. Anssi, with his keen eye and wealth of experience, effortlessly identifies species after species, sharing anecdotes and insights gleaned from years of birding across the globe.

As we traverse the rugged terrain, the conversation flows freely, weaving a tapestry of shared experiences and mutual appreciation for the natural world. Anssi's easygoing demeanor and humble nature make him the perfect companion for this journey of discovery, as we discuss the profound impact that birding has on fostering connections between people and cultures.
Let's Birding Sumatera, with its years of expertise in catering to birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, serves as our trusted guide throughout the expedition. Since its inception in 2015, the company has been at the forefront of promoting eco-tourism in Aceh, showcasing the rich biodiversity of Sumatra to visitors from around the world.
Spotted Hornbill |
Our destination is Ketambe, a haven for orangutans nestled within the embrace of Leuser National Park. The journey is long but filled with excitement as we encounter a plethora of avian delights along the way - from the majestic hornbills to the elusive wood owls and the majestic, crested serpent eagles soaring high above the canopy.
Upon our arrival in Ketambe, the anticipation is palpable as we settle into our guesthouse and discuss plans for the following day's adventure. Anssi's eagerness to witness orangutans in their natural habitat is contagious, and we eagerly anticipate the dawn of a new day filled with promise and possibility.
With the first light of morning, we set out on foot, venturing deep into the heart of the jungle. The symphony of nature surrounds us - the melodious chirping of cicadas, the enchanting songs of birds, and the gentle murmur of the river weaving through the forest. It's a sensory feast unlike any other, a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

And then, as if by magic, our patience is rewarded. A rustling in the trees above signals the presence of our elusive quarry - an orangutan and her baby, swinging gracefully through the branches. We observe in reverent silence, marveling at their beauty and grace as they go about their daily lives, unaware of the impact they have on our hearts and minds.

For Anssi Kullberg and all of us at Let's Birding Sumatera, this journey has been more than just a birding expedition - it has been a testament to the power of nature to inspire, to connect, and to transform lives. And as we reflect on the experiences shared and the bonds forged along the way, we are reminded once again of the profound beauty and importance of protecting our planet's natural treasures for generations to come.
