In the crisp winter of January 10-16, 2012, I embarked on a transformative journey to the ARRCN Symposium in South Korea, marking my inaugural experience at an international conference. Representing Raptor Indonesia Research, I joined a diverse group of researchers and activists from different regions of Indonesia, united by our passion for raptor conservation. Little did I know that this symposium would ignite a profound love for birds, particularly raptors, and forge lifelong connections with fellow enthusiasts from around the globe.

As I stood before an audience of esteemed researchers and activists, I shared insights about Rupat Island, an overlooked gem brimming with potential as a critical site for raptor migration. The opportunity to present my findings was both exhilarating and humbling, propelling me into the heart of the global raptor conservation movement.

During the symposium, I had the privilege of encountering remarkable individuals whose dedication and expertise left an indelible mark on my journey. Among them, Mr. Gunawan (Mbek) and Mr. Zaini Rachman stand out as mentors who kindled my passion for raptor research. Their guidance and encouragement fueled my curiosity and ignited a lifelong pursuit of avian conservation.

Moreover, the symposium served as a nexus for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration. From Malaysia, I formed a bond with Mr. Lim Kim Che, whose innovative approaches to raptor conservation inspired me to push the boundaries of my own research. Similarly, Mr. Toru Yamazaki from Japan captivated me with his profound understanding of migratory bird patterns, sparking a newfound appreciation for the intricacies of avian migration.

Beyond the exchange of knowledge and expertise, the symposium fostered enduring connections that transcended geographical boundaries. Long after the symposium concluded, I remained connected with fellow researchers and activists, nurturing a global network of support and camaraderie. These enduring friendships serve as a constant source of inspiration and motivation in my ongoing efforts to safeguard raptors and their habitats.

The symposium not only broadened my understanding of raptor conservation but also equipped me with invaluable tools and methodologies essential for effective research and advocacy. Workshops and presentations delved into the latest advancements in raptor monitoring techniques, habitat management strategies, and community engagement initiatives, empowering me to enact tangible change in the field.

Moreover, the symposium provided a platform to amplify voices from diverse backgrounds, underscoring the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in conservation efforts. Through shared experiences and collective action, we leveraged our collective expertise to address pressing challenges facing raptors worldwide, from habitat loss to illegal wildlife trade.

As I reflect on my journey into the world of raptors, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to attend the ARRCN Symposium in South Korea. It was a transformative experience that not only deepened my passion for avian conservation but also fostered enduring connections with like-minded individuals across borders.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all those who made this journey possible, from the organizers of the symposium to my fellow researchers and activists. Together, we stand united in our commitment to protect raptors and preserve the natural world for future generations. As I continue my career in avian conservation, I carry with me the lessons learned and friendships forged at the ARRCN Symposium, fueling my resolve to make a meaningful difference in the world of raptor conservation.
