Exploring Raptor Migration in Aceh: Insights from Observational Surveys

Abstract:

Raptor migration through Aceh, Indonesia, is a significant event, particularly during the spring season. This study presents findings from observational surveys conducted along the northern coastline of Sumatra, focusing on the movement patterns of migratory raptors. Utilizing exploratory methods and point counts, the team observed 100 individual raptors belonging to four species over a three-day survey period. The study highlights the importance of Aceh as a vital flyway for raptors and emphasizes the role of weather conditions, particularly wind direction, in influencing migratory behavior. Notably, the observation of 50 Birds of Prey (BOP) soaring and gliding towards Batee Island and Sabang Island marks a successful conclusion to the study, coinciding with World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) on May 11.


Introduction:

Raptor migration is a spectacle of nature, captivating scientists and enthusiasts alike with its intricate patterns and ecological significance. Aceh, situated at the northern tip of Sumatra, serves as a crucial corridor for the spring migratory journey of raptors traversing between the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This study aims to delve into the migratory dynamics of raptors in Aceh, shedding light on their flight directions, behavior, and the environmental factors shaping their journey. Furthermore, the study coincides with World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), emphasizing the global importance of avian migration and the need for its conservation.

Methods:

Observational surveys were conducted over a three-day period along the coastline of northern Sumatra, focusing on strategic locations near Batee Island and Sabang Island. The team employed a combination of exploratory methods and point counts to observe raptor movements. Binoculars and monoculars were utilized to enhance observation capabilities and aid in species identification. Data collection encompassed the number of individuals observed, species composition, flight direction, and behavioral patterns such as soaring and gliding.



Results:

The survey yielded valuable insights into the migratory patterns of raptors in Aceh, with a total of 100 individual birds observed belonging to four distinct species. The observation of 50 Birds of Prey (BOP) soaring and gliding toward Batee Island and Sabang Island underscores the significance of Aceh as a crucial stopover for migratory raptors. The study documented various flight directions and behavioral patterns, highlighting the adaptability of these birds in response to environmental conditions, particularly wind direction. The successful conclusion of the survey coincides with World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), adding an extra layer of significance to the findings.

Discussion:

The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of raptor migration in Aceh, emphasizing the region's role as a vital flyway for these majestic birds. The observed flight patterns and behavioral dynamics provide valuable insights into the ecological processes underlying avian migration. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of weather conditions, such as wind direction, in shaping migratory behavior.
